From niche labels to big brands, British beauty is having a moment. Here’s my pick of the best goodies around for your skin: think little gems that deep clean, refresh and give you a glow.
You can’t talk about British skincare without mentioning Simple products. Whether it’s the Cleansing Facial Wipes (the minis are ideal for a weekend away) or the new Moisture Boost Hydro Mist (boots.com), which is perfect for inflight and contains the rather luxurious touch of lotus flower, you’ll find something you’ll love in this brand’s range of kind products.
Naked Skin products are also kind to the skin, being made with 97% natural ingredients and not containing any synthetic fragrances or alcohol. The Perfect Getaway Cream Cleanser (nakedbodycare.com) swipes off make-up to leave skin feeling in tip-top condition.
One of the UK’s original and best beauty brands is of course Pond’s. Its Cold Cream (boots.com) was officially introduced in 1914 and has been an trusty pot to have on your dressing table ever since. The light formula can be used to cleanse (wipe off with cotton wool or simply rinse for extra-clean skin) and moisturise and even Kylie has put her youthful looks down to using it.
While working at Vogue, beauty editor Kathy Phillips had the idea to launch a new aromatherapy-based range of products, and in 2004, in conjunction with Aromatherapy Associates, This Works was launched. The high quality, design-conscious label has a whole host of indulgences that are aimed at the modern woman. A great travelling companion is the Perfect Skin Super Moisture (boots.com) – a rich antioxidant cream that acts as a serum and moisturiser in one.
Oskia London is another ‘clean-lined’ contemporary brand aimed at the savvy woman. Its Get Up and Glow (oskiaskincare.com) is an instant energising serum, enriched with youth-boosting nutrients and peptides that visibly brighten the complexion. The perfect illuminating wake-up call for working mums of the UK.
Talking of which, Dove Spa’s Flash Dash Instant Beauty Drops (dovespa.co.uk) is a fantastic skin boost, giving you a glow in seconds. Ideal for those who have been burning the candle at both ends. Who hasn’t?
It doesn’t get any more British than Green & Spring’s natural skincare line. Inspired by our verdant countryside, packaging has pretty whimsical illustrations of pastel-coloured birds while many of the ingredients are sourced from herbs and flowers native to our fields and meadows. The Lip Balm (greenandspring.com) is the cutest I’ve seen.
Champney’s, once only known for its British spas, is now just as well-regarded for its luxury pampering products. Its Gentle Facial Polish (boots.com) sloughs off dead skin cells to reveal a radiant complexion.
Love this British brand – Natural Empathy – a new find for me (nutribeautyproducts.com). This Bewitched rose and geranium toner balances, hydrate and primes skin. It’s non-drying and uses aloe vera with natural witch hazel and a blend of plant essences and herbal extracts to sooth, purify and tone. Magic!
Award-winning company Liz Earle started when Liz Earle and friend Kim Buckland, decided there was a gap in the UK market for a trusted beauty specialist company (lizearle.com). The business began in 1995 on the Isle of Wight and is now renowned for its expert service and pioneering products. This is one British brand to be proud of. The Cleanse and Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser is probably the best known of the vast stable of goodies. It is used with the muslin cloth and removes daily grim and make-up, leaving skin feeling unbelievably soft. Other signature products include The Gentle Face Exfoliator – used twice a week for a gentle way to get rid of blocked pores and flaky skin. It contains eucalyptus, cocoa butter and fine jojoba beads. The Instant Boost Skin Tonic is a beautifully fragrant floral toner, containing rose-secented geranium, and refreshes the skin after cleansing. The Superskin Moisturiser, meanwhile, is a fragrance-free, indulgent hydrator for the face with a veritable cocktail of goodies for the skin, such as Omega 3, vitamin E, cranberry and rose hip seed oils.
Unbelievably created 85 years ago by three leading dermatologists is Queen’s Eye Make-Up Remover (queen-cosmetics.com). Unlike many other formulas that describe themselves as gentle, this really does work hard to take off all traces of make-up. Perfect for sensitive skin.
Follow up with ethical British brand Organic Surge’s Eye Gel for refreshed and de-puffed eyes (organicsurge.com). This is really glorious and refreshing – a must-have in a tiny pot.
Finally two British ladies, renowned as experts in the beauty industry, are Sarah Chapman and Emma Hardie. Regarded as one of the leading facialists in the UK, Sarah Chapman’s product line is ultra-luxurious with results-driven treats for getting premium skin. The Discovery Collection (sarahchapman.net) is a set of three travel-sized essential products (cleanser, serum and day cream) in a lovely white pouch.
Emma Hardie’s Professional Facial Starter Kit (emmahardie.com) is also perfect for holidaying. A leading pioneer in natural, healing skin rejuvenation, she is one of the most accomplished facialists and skincare specialists in the UK today. This kit is packed with her goodies, to make you feel amazing. The Natural Lift and Sculpt Cleansing Balm can be used alone or in conjunction with the Rosehip Exfoliating Seeds (you combine them to make your own strength exfoliator – a bespoke, blend-your-own approach that is very now in the beauty world). Also contained within, and shown here full-size, is the Amazing Face Natural lift and sculpt a.m. /p.m. hydrating and firming treatment moisturiser. A facial serum and moisturiser in one, this rich cream smoothes, hydrate and help to restore the skin’s youthful appearance. Smells fantastic, too, due to its organic Lavender, Geranium and Peppermint essential oils.
Here’s to the best beauties in Britain.
