Despite the unfortunate weather, we’re making the most of our Cornish holiday and all that the Retallack Resort near Padstow has to offer.
Last night, our meal at Retallack’s on site restaurant The Green Room, headed up by 2008 Masterchef winner (and keen surfer) James Nathan, was a wonderful start to the holiday.
The Green Room (the name refers to inside the barrel of a wave) is housed in a light, airy room overlooking the resort’s in-house FlowRider – Cornwall’s only artificial wave – and offers a blend of traditional and contemporary both in menu and style.
Cornish produce is incredibly varied and James describes the county as a ‘massive natural larder’ from which he can source meat, shellfish, fish and vegetables all freshly and organically cultivated nearby to create a delicious and impressive array of dishes. Favourites include his speciality crab linguini with chilli, lemon grass, sea lettuce and coconut, Porthilly mussels with Camel Valley wine and oyster sauce the popular scallops, mango salsa, lime, coriander, black sesame and coconut, not to mention his MasterChef winning dish: chicken ballotine, porcini mushrooms, mash potatoes, spinach and carrots in a Madeira sauce.
Next to the restaurant is The Lounge, a casual hang-out with board games, pool table, X-Box and cosy corners to retreat to after (or before) your meal.
Meanwhile, most of today was spent down at Land’s End, contemplating life on the edge. Returning home through the drizzle, we’ve had a soak in our hot tub and a game of tennis on the courts. And the sun finally came out!
