Tame temptations: Shea Moisture’s your new best friend

by angelinavc

Made with almond milk, argan oil, marshamallow root extract and raw shea butter this just-launched shampoo and conditioner duo from Shea Moisture reads like a ‘care package’ for your hair.

I’ve long been a fan of Shea Moisture products – the Mixed Chicks kids’ range is packed with the only products that work nicely on my kids’ hair. Being mixed-race, most high-street brands are either too heavy or not effective enough, on their light curls.

Despite its modern packaging, the brand was actually conceived in 1912, by market-seller Sofi Tucker in Bonthe, Sierra Leone. By age 19, the widowed mother of four was selling Shea Butter, African Black Soap and her homemade hair and skin preparations all over the countryside and so SheaMoisture was born.

The new Smooth & Tame collection is actually aimed at straight as well as wavy hair. Mine has a slight kink to it which can result in frizz, if not properly looked after and so I was curious to test them out. The formulas are velvety and sumptuous, and  crucially not too heavy. Like all Shea Moidture products, they contain organic and fair-trade ingredients with no nasties. Hair is left smooth and detangled.

As well as a commitment to sourcing sustainably-produced ingredients and using organic goodies – such as shea butter and almond milk, the brand also prides itself on using community commerce-sourced Argan oil and has an ‘inclusive-exclusive’ ethos – offering beauty products for all cultures. What’s more, 10% of Shea Moisture Community Commerce sales go to women-led businesses, to support communities that supply ingredients for our products, or to support The Sofi Tucker Foundation. The company founded Community Commerce to support these communities, especially those that source and make some of the key ingredients in Shea Moisture products.
