I’ve always been a bit afraid of anything with the word ‘peel’ in its title (it always reminds me of the scene in Sex & The City, when Samantha’s face is left beetroot-red and raw after having a peel in her lunch hour), but with the promise that Algenist‘s Genius Bi-Phase Peel, £68, is gentle to use and will leave skin clear and luminous – and glowing in a good way – I thought it was worth a try.
A gentle DIY peel is perfect if you have a complexion – like mine at the moment – which is looking winter-dull, tired and in need of reviving. Algenist’s dual-phase peel combines the effectiveness of peeling acids with the nourishing benefits of Microalgae Oil so it is nowhere near as harsh as many other products out there.
It’s also simple to use: after cleansing, shake the bottle to activate the two different ‘phases’. Then use the cotton pads to swipe it over the face, leaving it on for 2-3 minutes, then rinse off.
The unique oil-water formula contains a Water Phase which consists of Alguronic Acid, Glycolic Acid and Shikmic Acid, which work together to resurface, exfoliate and rejuvenate, and an Oil Phase. The latter has a high concentration of Microalgae Oil to comfort and restore the skin.
You can use it once or twice a week and it has an immediate restorative effect – with skin looking more luminous, clear, and silky-smooth and no redness in sight. I’m a convert: and this has become my must-have ‘pick-me-up’ in a bottle.
