Love Beauty and Planet: the beauty launch that’s kind to you and the world

by angelinavc

I love finding a new brand that works both on brains and beauty. And the big news is that Love Beauty and Planet – coming to a supermarket or chemist on a high street near you soon – does just that. With Unilever’s clout behind the brand, the line of six hair and skincare ranges puts sustainability at its heart.

Helping you to look good, and feel good, too, the products are used with ethically and sustainably sourced ingredients, vegan-friendly formulations and bottles that are 100% recycled and recyclable. The range of hair, face and body care products come different fragrance combinations, such as Murumuru Butter & Rose, Coconut Water & Mimosa Flower and Coconut Oil & Ylang Ylang.

The Shower Gel, above, gives a refreshing cleanse with a tropical sensation. Every time you step into the shower, it will transport you to a Pacific Island, and it uses organic Coconut Oil to nourish and hydrate skin and has the freshness of exotic Ylang Ylang flower oil sourced from Moheli.

Unusually for a mass market brand, each of the different fragrances is an artisanal blend, based around an ethically sourced essential oil or absolute such as Moroccan Mimosa flower, Bulgarian Rose and Ylang Ylang from Moheli. These ingredients are obtained through responsible sourcing programmes which help support the ecosystems and livelihoods of the farmers and communities who grow them. This is done through partnering with local leaders and NGOs to support projects that improve the community through agriculture, education, health and nutrition.

The company’s ethos of ‘small acts of love’ is based on the premise that by using ethically sourced products, we can help save our environment, while also looking good – making us and the planet more beautiful. The brand uses natural or plant-based ingredients wherever possible, only using non-natural materials if they are essential to product quality or performance. As well as all the products being vegan, there has been care and attention given to packaging – with  special adhesive used to ensure labels separate cleanly from the bottle during the recycling process so bottles get a second life. And each one of the bottles is made from 100% recycled plastic and is 100% recyclable.

Going a step further than many high street brands, Love Beauty and Planet has also announced that it will not only disclose its annual carbon footprint annually but work towards a goal to reduce its carbon footprint by 20% by 2020. What’s more, to remain accountable for its carbon emissions, the company will put a tax on the carbon the brand emits while making its products – contributing to a Carbon Tax Fund. This fund will be used to support programmes that help to reduce carbon emissions and landfill waste, all aimed at reducing impact and creating a positive change.

As well as gorgeous scents, the products also contain natural and sustainably sourced ingredients, like Muru Muru Butter, organic Coconut Oil and natural Shea Butter. Contained in the line-up are innovative types of products – like the Gentle Cleansing Conditioner, £8.49, a two-in-one conditioner-shampoo, which is designed for hair that is prone to dryness. It helps dissolve grease and cleanses without stripping the strands. While it cleans, the formula deposits conditioning agents, locking in moisture so hair is left smooth and glossy. The wild Shea Butter and Australian Sandalwood Oil are known to gently cleanse and hydrate for healthy-looking hair.

I’ve also been using the Coconut Water & Mimosa Flower Body Lotion, £8.99. It gives a rich level of hydration to limbs and leaves a gentle mimosa-flower scent. It is infused with coconut water so gives a refreshing feel.

Also in the same range, is the Face Cleansing Gel, £7.99, which is a gorgeous kick-start to your day. it rebalances and gently cleans, while hydrating with coconut water.
Finally, I’ve also been trying out the Hope & Repair Two Minute Magic Masque, £9.99, which is a deep-conditioner to use weekly. It transforms hair – which is damaged due to using heated tools or too much time in the sun – leaving it healthy and shiny again.

Love, love, love.

The Love Beauty and Planet range is available in Boots stores.
