I love authentic beauty – those brands that have done their research, found ingredients and uncovered age-old remedies that really work due to a rich heritage rooted in the beauty world.

SheaMoisture has long been a favourite brand of mine, due to their products that really work, a sleek approach to their packaging, and the fact that they have practical products aimed at mixed-race and black skin. Their children’s range, incidentally, has long been a favourite in our house and staple products of my two boys, who are of mixed heritage and who used to struggle to find products that were not too girly, and which worked for their hair and skin.

Back to the subject in hand, however, is the African Black Soap range. It harnesses an ancient beauty remedy, used for centuries throughout Africa, to give immediate relief for very dry skin. Douse the skin with the rich Soothing Body Wash, £11.99, in the shower. It deep cleanses skin and soothes skin that is flaky, itchy and in need of moisture. Its rich formula is made from leaves, cocoa pods, Shea tree bark and plantains (which are burned to an ash, giving its dark hue), it’s then added to coconut oil and organic fair trade shea butter – helping to hydrate and soothe skin. The formula is also enriched with oats, aloe vera and Vitamin E for added moisturisation.

Afterwards, apply the SheaMoisture African Black Soap Soothing Body Lotion, £11.99, on the limbs and body. It immediately hydrates and sinks in like a dream, it works thought the day to calm irritated and sensitive skin.
