Returning to the basics: why Witch’s witch-hazel products are simple and effective

by angelinavc

Ever since I was a teenager I’ve been a fan of Witch Skincare‘s witch-hazel products so I was delighted to recently rediscover it again. Sometimes you can’t beat going back to the basics. The brand has been experts in products focusing on witch-hazel for over 50 years, championing the benefits of witch-hazel across a range of skincare products – which can fit in seamlessly to any skincare routine.

Witch-hazel is known for its natural skin care properties. An active ingredient, it also contains antioxidants which help maintain normal skin renewal and speed up the skin’s recovery from a breakout. The natural ingredient also helps tighten pores, improve skin tone and soothe sensitive skin.

I’ve recently ‘pared-back’ my regimen to try and calm down my skin – which has suddenly become sensitive and slightly prone to acne, so this little trio of goodies was just the thing to help. Firstly, is the iconic SOS Blemish Stick (£2.69, superdrug.com) – the brand’s hero product. It fights bacteria which causes spots – and gets to work instantly, you dab it on and it relieves and lessens the looks of oil. It’s super easy to use and just such a handy product to have in your kit.

The witch-hazel helps reduce excess oil and blemishes so skin is left clearer and brighter. I’ve been using it morning and night and it has really help lessen spots and blemishes and doesn’t feel too harsh on sensitive areas..

Then, there is The Purifying Clearing Mask (£1.99, superdrug.com), which is great to use weekly for a deep cleanse – just leave it on for 15 minutes, relax and it goes to work. The sheet mask helps clear skin, without drying it out – leaving velvety smooth and hydrated. Combining witch-hazel and red clay, it helps remove impurities for a smooth and matt complexion. Red clay has been used in skincare since the times of Ancient Egyptians and Ancient Romans. Known for its skin refining benefits, it absorbs excess oil on the skin and helps to draw out impurities.

The mask also ticks the eco-aware box, as it is made from 100% bamboo fibre and is 100% biodegradable. The sachet is deliberately narrow too – to reduce the amount of packaging used. In fact, the brand is dedicated to sustainability, with products containing natural ingredients and packaging being reduced where possible to lower its carbon footprint.

Wherever possible Witch Skincare also uses FSC-certified materials. (FSC certification ensures that products come from responsibly managed forests that provide environmental, social, and economic benefits.) Most of the brand’s tubes are made with a high percentage of recycled plastic and, wherever possible, they can be recycled. It also looks for alternatives to plastic, such as the bamboo fibre.

Lastly, the Brightening Night Cream (£5.50, tesco.com), blends witch-hazel and Vitamin B, niacinamide, to rejuvenate the skin as you sleep. So, you wake up looking more radiant, clear and bright. It also helps to smooth the complexion, reduce the appearance of redness, and helps prevent future breakouts… all while you drift off to somewhere pleasant. Simple but true.
